A Comparison of the Ephrata Community and the Shakers

Presented by Lydia Jones

The Shakers are probably the most famous religious communal group, known for their lifestyle, music, and furniture. Founded before the Shakers, the Ephrata Cloister members also lived an ascetic life and produced works of music and art. Religiously, these groups shared some similarities, primarily their belief in divine inspiration and an androgynous God. Because God was both male and female, women were considered important to the groups, though neither group gave complete earthly equality. Some Shakers did get involved in secular matters including the women’s suffrage movement.
