Pennsylvania German Architecture: Construction Details
The early German immigrants to Pennsylvania brought with them some ideas about building houses and adapted some new ideas they learned once arriving. The Historic Ephrata Cloister provides some of the finest surviving examples of this architectural style. On Thursday, October 13 the Virtual Ephrata Academy will offer the Zoom program “Pennsylvania German Architecture: Construction Details.” The presenter, Mike Emery, Administrator of the Cornwall Iron Furnace, will go beyond a look at floorplans and room usage to explore construction materials and the techniques used by the builders. There will be discussion about home exteriors and interiors, roofing, basements, fireplaces, stoves, windows, doors, hardware, etc. Images will also provide a look at both plainly ornamented homes and high style houses.
This program comes as a preview to Architecture Day, a day long program at the Historic Ephrata Cloister on Saturday, October 15. The Virtual Ephrata Academy, “Pennsylvania German Architecture: Construction Details,” is a free program, but advance registration is required. The program is offered on Zoom starting at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13.
