Expanded Site Tours Return in August with a Focus on the Decorative Arts of Ephrata Cloister
You’re invited to Historic Ephrata Cloister’s Expanded Site Tours on Saturday, August 9, with tours offered at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM, rain or shine. This month’s theme, Decorative Arts of Ephrata Cloister, offers a unique opportunity to explore the art of this early religious community.
Visitors will walk between three themed stations located throughout the site, each focused on a different form of craftsmanship practiced at Ephrata:
- Textile Arts: Learn about the process of weaving and how fabric was created in the 18th century. Discover how finished cloth was ornamented with embroidery, particularly cross-stitching, to add decoration and symbolism.
- Clockmaking: Explore the history of clocks crafted by married, or “Householder,” members of the German Seventh Day Baptist Church at Ephrata Cloister. These finely made timepieces reflect both technical skill and spiritual purpose.
- Frakturschriften: Delve into this German gothic calligraphy style, used by the community at Ephrata to create beautifully illustrated wall charts, music manuscripts, and other sacred texts.
The program last up to 90 minutes and is best for those ages 12 and up. To ensure an engaging and personal experience, each tour is limited to 40 participants. Tickets are $12 per person, and $2 for Ephrata Cloister Associates members. Included with tickets for Expanded Site Tours are regular guided tours of the Sisters’ House and Meetinghouse, which will take place at 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, and 3:00 PM.
Advance registration is required. To reserve your spot, call 717-733-6600 or visit the Visitor Center.
